When facing overwhelming odds, it's easy to fall for a convincing lie. The Assyrian official Rabshakeh tried to do just that to the people of Jerusalem.
Rabshakeh, speaking for the powerful King Sennacherib, uses a tactic as old as time: intimidation and deception. He directly addresses the people, bypassing their king, Hezekiah, to sow distrust and fear.
The Strategy
- Undermining Authority: He tries to make Hezekiah look foolish and powerless ('Do not let Hezekiah deceive you').
- False Hope: He dismisses any reliance on Egypt as useless ('if we lean on Egypt, behold, this bruised reed of a staff...').
- Absolute Power: He asserts Assyria's unstoppable might, claiming they are sent by God to destroy them.
This is a classic psychological warfare tactic – making the enemy feel hopeless and alone, convincing them that surrender is their only option. Rabshakeh is not interested in truth; he's interested in breaking their will to resist.
