What does it truly mean to 'fear other gods'? It's more than just worshipping idols; it's about where we place our ultimate trust and allegiance.
The phrase 'feared other gods' points to a fundamental issue: a divided heart. In ancient Israelite understanding, 'fearing' the LORD meant more than just being scared; it encompassed reverence, obedience, and trust.
When they began to fear other gods, they were essentially saying that these other deities offered something YHWH, the God who freed them, could not or would not provide. This could be perceived security, prosperity, or simply a different way of life that seemed more appealing.
This division breaks the core of the covenant relationship. You cannot serve two masters. When we give our ultimate trust, our deepest reverence, and our primary obedience to anything or anyone else – whether it's money, power, comfort, or even other people – we are, in effect, fearing other gods.
