This verse is easy to skim, but notice it's not just one prophet God used. He "warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer." This relentless, multi-voiced urgency shows God’s deep desire to pull His people back from destruction. He didn't just give them a single warning; He flooded them with His calls for repentance through every avenue He had.
Yet the LORD warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.” But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the LORD their God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage occurs as the Assyrian Empire is about to conquer the northern kingdom of Israel and deport its people. God had repeatedly sent prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah about their persistent disobedience and to call them back to the covenant He made with their ancestors. The verse highlights God's persistent love and mercy, even as judgment is imminent due to their refusal to listen.
Why did God send so many prophets? It wasn't a casual suggestion; it was a life-or-death warning.
A Multi-Channel Alert System
God didn't leave Israel and Judah guessing. This verse highlights that He used every prophet and every seer – essentially, all His available communication channels – to get His message across. This wasn't a one-off event; it was a consistent, repeated effort.
The Core Message: Repentance
The message was clear and unwavering: "Turn from your evil ways." This isn't just about acknowledging wrongdoing; it's a call for a fundamental change of direction. They were to stop their destructive paths and actively embrace God's commands and statutes. This was the consistent theme throughout Israel's history, a plea for faithfulness.
What exactly were they supposed to turn back to? It wasn't an arbitrary set of rules.
Rooted in the Past, Sent Through the Present
The instruction to obey God's commandments and statutes wasn't new. It was "in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers." This points directly to the covenant God made at Mount Sinai, establishing the foundation for their relationship.
