2 Corinthians 8:12-15

This verse cuts through the pressure to perform or give more than you're able. Paul emphasizes that God's true measure isn't the quantity of your gift, but the genuine willingness behind it, given from what you actually possess.
For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is writing to the Corinthian church, urging them to complete their generous offering for the needy believers in Jerusalem. He's reminded them of the Macedonians' eager giving despite their poverty, setting an example for the Corinthians. This verse emphasizes that God values the willing heart behind a gift, not the size of the gift itself, so their offering is accepted based on their current ability, not some impossible standard.
Does God expect the same level of giving from everyone, regardless of their situation? This verse unpacks the true measure of generous giving.
Paul is talking about financial giving here, specifically in the context of supporting the needs of other believers. He emphasizes that God's assessment isn't based on how much someone could give if they had more, but on the spirit and capacity they have right now.
Readiness Over Riches
The key word is 'readiness.' It speaks to a willing heart, a generous spirit, and a genuine desire to help. When that readiness is present, God accepts the gift.
Measured by What You Have
God understands our individual circumstances. He doesn't hold us accountable for resources we don't possess. The focus is on cheerfully sharing what God has already entrusted to us, whatever the amount.
Is there a right way to give? This verse hints at a divine standard for our generosity that goes beyond the amount.
Paul's instruction in 2 Corinthians, particularly in chapters 8 and 9, centers on a cheerful, willing spirit in giving. This isn't about begrudgingly parting with money or feeling forced into a contribution.
God's Delight in Willing Hearts
Ask a follow-up
When we give readily and with joy, we honor God and reflect His own generous nature. It demonstrates our trust in Him as the source of all we have. God’s acceptance is tied to the willing spirit, not just the material outcome.
Avoiding the Burden of Obligation
This principle frees us from the pressure of comparing our giving to others or feeling inadequate because our circumstances limit our capacity. The focus shifts from obligation to opportunity.
