This verse reveals that reconciliation isn't just a past event; it's an ongoing ministry God entrusts to us. We are not only recipients of His amazing grace in bringing us back, but also His partners in extending that same offer of peace to others.
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is explaining the incredible new reality believers have in Christ – they are new creations, no longer living for themselves but for the one who died for them. This passage builds to the amazing truth that God has appointed us, the reconciled, to be His ambassadors, actively bringing His message of reconciliation to a broken world.
Ever feel like you're the one driving your spiritual journey? This verse flips that idea on its head. It reveals where every good thing, especially our relationship with God, truly originates.
The Divine Initiative
Paul starts this powerful declaration with "All this is from God." This isn't just a casual statement; it's the foundational truth for everything that follows. Our reconciliation with God wasn't our idea, nor was it something we could achieve on our own. It was entirely God's initiative, His plan from eternity.
God's Perfect Work
Think about it: if the power to bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity came from us, we'd still be separated. But God, in His immense love and sovereignty, initiated the reconciliation through Jesus Christ. Every step, from the plan to the execution, belongs to Him.
What does it truly mean to be 'reconciled' to God? It’s more than just making up; it's a profound restoration of a broken relationship, made possible only by Jesus.
Restored Relationship
The core of God's work is reconciliation. This word points to the mending of a fractured relationship. Before Christ, humanity was alienated from God due to sin – enemies, in fact (Romans 5:10). God's act of reconciliation means He has removed the barrier of sin and made it possible for us to be His friends again.
The Work of the Cross
Ask a follow-up
This reconciliation wasn't a diplomatic negotiation; it was accomplished through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He absorbed the penalty for our sins, satisfying God's righteous judgment and making us acceptable to Him. This is the central, life-changing truth of the gospel.
If God has reconciled us, does the story end there? Absolutely not! He entrusts us with the very same message and mission He accomplished in us.
A Shared Mission
Paul doesn't just state that we were reconciled; he immediately connects it to a calling: "...and gave us the ministry of reconciliation." This is the church's essential purpose. Because God has restored our relationship with Him through Christ, He now sends us out to share this life-changing news with others.
Be Ambassadors for Christ
This ministry isn't about forcing our beliefs on people. It's about living out the reality of God's reconciliation in our own lives and then sharing the message of how others can also experience this peace with God. We become conduits, reflecting God's grace and inviting others to be reconciled to Him through Jesus.
