This verse powerfully contrasts the "letter" of the law with the "Spirit" of God. It's not just about rules; the "letter" alone, detached from its divine source, can actually become a dead burden, while the "Spirit" breathes vibrant, life-giving reality into our walk with God. The sufficiency we have comes from this Spirit, not from our own ability to follow rules.
who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is contrasting the old covenant, symbolized by the stone tablets and a ministry that led to death, with the new covenant established through Christ. He's emphasizing that their ability to serve comes directly from God's Spirit, not from their own merit or adherence to Old Testament law. This sets the stage for his discussion on the glory and freedom found in the new covenant, which surpasses the fading glory of the old.
Ever feel like you're not 'enough' for the tasks God puts before you? This verse flips that script.
Paul isn't saying we become sufficient; he's declaring that God has made us sufficient. Our qualification comes from Him, not from our own training, talents, or track record. He equips those He calls.
Think about it: God calls ordinary people – fishermen, tax collectors, tentmakers – and makes them extraordinary ministers. Our ability to serve in this 'new covenant' isn't about our own strength, but about God's empowering presence.
What's the difference between following rules and being led by God's Spirit? One can kill, the other gives life.
Paul contrasts two ways of approaching God's Word and God's will:
