Paul's heartfelt words reveal that his stern letter wasn't about punishment, but a desperate attempt to prevent his own pain upon arrival, wanting instead for their reunion to be pure joy. He assumes their shared joy, a beautiful, vulnerable testament to the deep connection he felt with the Corinthian believers. This vulnerability underscores how much he yearned for their spiritual health and their shared delight in Christ.
And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is addressing a letter he previously sent to the Corinthian church, likely one that was stern and painful to write. He explains that this difficult letter was necessary to correct a serious sin within the church and to prepare them for his upcoming visit, so that his arrival wouldn't be filled with further confrontation and sorrow, but with shared joy. This passage immediately follows his discussion of judging and forgiving the repentant sinner, highlighting the emotional weight of his apostolic responsibilities.
Paul's letters can sometimes sound stern. But what was really going on behind his words here?
Paul explains his previous letter wasn't meant to be a harsh decree, but an act of love. He feared a painful confrontation upon arrival. Instead, he wanted their shared joy to be complete when he saw them. This shows that true spiritual leadership isn't about wielding power over people, but about nurturing relationships and seeking their spiritual well-being. He had confidence in their good intentions, which is why he wrote what he did – to prevent a painful situation, not to cause one.
Why did Paul write a difficult letter instead of just waiting to speak in person?
Paul's previous letter was a 'preventative measure.' He was dealing with a difficult situation and perhaps a specific individual causing trouble. He chose to address it in writing beforehand to spare both himself and the Corinthians unnecessary pain and shame when he arrived. His goal was to clear the air, correct the course, and ensure that their reunion would be a moment of pure, unhindered rejoicing. This teaches us the importance of addressing issues proactively, even when it's uncomfortable, to preserve the health and joy of the community.
