It’s easy to read this as just a pep talk from King Hezekiah, but notice the subtle shift in his words. Hezekiah doesn't say "God is with us," but "there are more with us than with him," pointing directly to the superior power of God against the Assyrian army. This isn't just about courage; it's a confident declaration that the divine presence on their side makes them overwhelmingly stronger.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
English Standard Version (ESV)
King Hezekiah and Jerusalem are facing an imminent invasion by the mighty Assyrian army, led by Sennacherib. Despite their overwhelming military might, Hezekiah rallies his people, reminding them that God is on their side, a power far greater than any earthly army. This encouragement sets the stage for their faith-filled response to the impending siege.
Imagine facing an army so vast it seems impossible to overcome. What does it take to stand firm when fear whispers defeat?
God's people were facing an existential threat from the Assyrian empire. King Hezekiah, despite the immense pressure, calls his people to two fundamental responses: Be strong and courageous. This isn't just about bravery; it's about a divinely-inspired resilience. It’s a command to not let the sheer size of the problem dictate their internal state. Fear and dismay are natural reactions, but they are not the final word when God is involved.
The verse claims 'there are more with us than with him.' Who is 'us,' and who provides this superior force?
Hezekiah doesn't just tell his people to be brave; he gives them a reason why they can be. The seemingly overwhelming Assyrian army is powerful, but the 'more' that stands with Judah is infinitely greater. This isn't a numerical superiority of human soldiers. It's the presence and power of God Himself. When human strength fails and circumstances look bleak, our ultimate advantage comes from the Lord of Hosts, the Creator of the universe, who is on our side.
