Uzziah was a king, and kings waged war. But did God's blessing on his rule mean he was free from all divine boundaries?
Uzziah's reign is a fascinating study in contrasts. He was a righteous king who 'did what was right in the eyes of the Lord' (v. 4). He strengthened Jerusalem, built armies, and was blessed by God, as seen in his military victories detailed in verse 6. These were all within the expected duties of a godly king.
However, the narrative quickly shifts. Later in the chapter, Uzziah oversteps his God-given authority by entering the temple to burn incense – a task reserved only for priests. This act of defiance led to his immediate punishment by God. Verse 6, while showing his military prowess, sets the stage for this later, critical failure. It demonstrates how outward success can sometimes mask an inward arrogance that will eventually lead to a fall when God's specific boundaries are crossed.
