It's easy to focus on the victory, but notice God acted as they began to sing and praise. This isn't about singing to earn God's help, but that their worship itself became the catalyst for His powerful intervention, demonstrating a profound trust that moved heaven.
And when they began to sing and praise, the LORD set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, devoting them to destruction, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another.
English Standard Version (ESV)
King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah are facing an overwhelming enemy army with no earthly means of defense, so they turn to God in prayer and fasting. After God promises victory, they send out singers and musicians ahead of the army, trusting in His word rather than their own strength. As they begin to praise God, the enemy forces turn on each other and are utterly defeated, fulfilling God's promise to Judah.
Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed, facing a challenge that seemed impossible? This passage shows us a battle strategy that looks nothing like our usual tactics.
In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were facing an overwhelming army. Instead of grabbing swords, their strategy was to praise God. Verse 22 tells us that 'when they began to sing and praise, the LORD set an ambush...' This wasn't just a song; it was an act of faith. They chose to focus on who God is, even in the face of fear. This act of worship shifted the spiritual atmosphere, and God Himself intervened, causing their enemies to destroy each other. It highlights that our spiritual battles are often won not by might or strength, but by trusting and declaring God's power through worship.
What happens when ordinary people do something extraordinary out of obedience to God? This verse reveals God’s incredible response.
The passage in 2 Chronicles 20 emphasizes that God didn't just watch; He acted. 'the LORD set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed.' God took their act of worship as a signal that they had fully entrusted the battle to Him. He then orchestrated a divine victory, causing the enemy forces to turn on one another. This shows us that God is deeply pleased when we honor Him, especially when we do so in the midst of adversity. Our praise isn't just an emotional outpouring; it's a declaration of our faith that unlocks God’s active power in our lives and situations.
