It's easy to skim over this, but the fact that Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and then built defensive cities highlights a crucial shift. Instead of focusing on consolidating his rule and securing his existing territory, his attention was immediately drawn to building up fortifications, revealing a king more concerned with walls and defense than with caring for his people's well-being from his central city.
Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built cities for defense in Judah. He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam, Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, fortified cities that are in Judah and in Benjamin. He made the fortresses strong, and put commanders in them, and stores of food, oil, and wine. And he put shields and spears in all the cities and made them very strong. So he held Judah and Benjamin.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Right after Solomon's son Rehoboam foolishly rejected the elders' advice, the northern tribes seceded, leaving him in charge of only Judah and Benjamin. This verse shows Rehoboam's immediate response to this political crisis: fortifying his reduced kingdom by building defensive cities. This strategic move highlights his attempt to secure his territory after the kingdom's devastating split.
When a kingdom fractures, what's the first thing a new king should do? Rehoboam faced a crisis, and his response shows us where true security lies.
The Fractured Kingdom
The story of Rehoboam is a stark reminder of how quickly things can fall apart. After Solomon's reign, the united kingdom split into two: Israel (the northern ten tribes) and Judah (the southern two tribes, led by Rehoboam's son, Abijah, though Rehoboam was king at this point and ruling from Jerusalem).
Building for Defense
Instead of despairing or making rash decisions, Rehoboam's immediate action was practical and strategic. He focused on strengthening his own territory, Judah. He 'built cities for defense'. This wasn't about aggression, but about establishing stability and protecting his people and his land from the potentially hostile northern kingdom.
Is a kingdom built on walls and fortresses alone? Rehoboam's actions reveal a deeper truth about what truly secures a people.
More Than Just Walls
While Rehoboam's building projects were wise for immediate security, the long-term strength of Judah depended on more than just physical defenses. The subsequent history of Rehoboam's reign shows that true security comes from faithfulness to God.
A Spiritual Core
Even though he fortified cities, Rehoboam and his people eventually turned away from the Lord. This spiritual weakness ultimately undermined any physical security they had. The book of Chronicles, which records this history, consistently emphasizes that a nation's greatest defense is its obedience to God.
