The verse doesn't just say they avoided dishonest motives; it highlights that their ministry wasn't even based on pleasing words or clever excuses. They were straightforwardly presenting the truth, not seeking to manipulate people for gain, which is a profound standard for any kind of leadership or influence.
For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul and his companions are defending their ministry and motives against accusations, likely from those who opposed the Gospel. They're emphasizing their genuine care and purity of intention in sharing the message, contrasting their approach with deceptive or self-serving tactics. This statement directly precedes their assertion that they acted like a nursing mother and a father with their own children, further illustrating their selfless love and commitment to the Thessalonian believers.
Ever feel like you're being talked into something? Or maybe you've seen leaders more interested in filling their own pockets than serving others? Paul addresses this head-on.
Paul and his companions were incredibly intentional about their motives. They weren't trying to win favor with smooth talk or manipulative language.
Why Avoid Flattery?
Greed can be a subtle poison, even in ministry. How did Paul ensure his motives were pure?
The second part of Paul's defense strikes at the heart of selfish ambition: greed. He states they didn't come with 'a pretext for greed,' meaning they had no hidden agenda to enrich themselves.
