When Samuel arrived to anoint a king, he first saw Eliab, a man who looked the part. But God had a different plan. This story reminds us that God's perspective is vastly different from ours.
Divine Perspective vs. Human Sight
When God sent Samuel to Jesse's house, Samuel's first impression was based on outward appearance. Eliab, Jesse's eldest son, was tall and impressive, fitting the typical mold of a king. Samuel thought, 'Surely this is the Lord's anointed.' (1 Samuel 16:6).
But the Lord's reply is profound: 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.' (1 Samuel 16:7).
This isn't just about kings; it's about how God values character, inner qualities, and faithfulness over superficial traits. What we might overlook or dismiss, God often esteems highly.
