Jesse's sons are paraded before Samuel, each seemingly qualified to be king. But God's choice isn't among the obvious candidates.
When Samuel arrives to anoint the next king, Jesse presents his elder sons first. These are the ones who look the part – tall, strong, impressive. Yet, God's eyes are not on outward appearances. He's looking for something deeper, something hidden away while the others are present.
This is a powerful reminder that God often works in the unexpected places and with the most unlikely people. The one who is 'keeping the sheep' – often seen as the least important, the youngest, the overlooked – is the one God chooses.
