Saul claims he's done exactly what God commanded. But something's not right. What did he miss?
Saul's statement in 1 Samuel 15:20 is a masterclass in self-deception. He lists his accomplishments – going on the mission, bringing back King Agag, and devoting the Amalekites to destruction. On the surface, it sounds like perfect obedience.
The Missing Piece
However, the bigger picture of God's command in 1 Samuel 15:3 was clear: "Utterly destroy every man, woman, infant, and suckling, ox, sheep, camel, and donkey."
Saul did go on the mission and he did bring back Agag. But he didn't utterly destroy everything. He spared the best of the sheep and oxen, and crucially, Agag himself. This wasn't just an oversight; it was a deliberate choice to hold back.
The Heart of the Matter
God looks at the heart. Partial obedience, where we obey the parts we like or that benefit us, is still disobedience. It’s like saying "yes" to God with your lips while saying "no" with your actions.
