1 Samuel 14:33-35

What does 1 Samuel 14:33-35 mean?

What's easily overlooked here is how quickly Saul's reaction moves from hearing about a sin to enacting a solution. He doesn't pause to investigate or question; instead, he immediately commands a stone to be rolled, demonstrating a deep, instinctual understanding that this transgression against God's law demanded a swift, public act of repentance. This shows how seriously they took even dietary laws as expressions of faithfulness to the Lord.

Then they told Saul, “Behold, the people are sinning against the LORD by eating with the blood.” And he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone to me here.” And Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Let every man bring his ox or his sheep and slaughter them here and eat, and do not sin against the LORD by eating with the blood.’” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night and they slaughtered them there. And Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first altar that he built to the LORD.

What 1 Samuel 14:33-35 means

The Israelites, emboldened by their victory over the Philistines, are ravenously eating meat, but they're doing it improperly, consuming it while the blood is still in it, which was a strict prohibition from God. Saul, upon hearing this, recognizes it as a grave sin and immediately orders a large stone to be brought, intending to address the issue. This sets the stage for how Saul will attempt to establish proper worship and obedience after this chaotic battle.

The Sin of Eating with Blood

In the heat of battle, David's men craved food. But their desperate hunger led them to a sin that threatened to undo God's people. What made eating blood such a serious offense?

The people, in their haste and hunger after battle, began to eat meat with the blood still in it. This was not just a minor dietary slip-up; it was a direct violation of God's law given to Noah and reiterated through Moses.

Why the Big Deal?

Life is in the Blood: God declared that the life of the flesh is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11). Blood was set apart as a symbol of life and was to be used exclusively for atonement on the altar. Consuming it was seen as usurping God's prerogative over life and death, and it was associated with pagan rituals.
Covenant Violation: Eating blood was explicitly forbidden in the Mosaic Covenant. It distinguished Israel from the surrounding nations who practiced such things. To eat with the blood was to break covenant with the LORD, aligning with the practices God was casting out of the land.
A Sign of Disobedience: Even in a moment of perceived triumph, the people's actions revealed a deeper pattern of ignoring God's commands when it was inconvenient or difficult.

Saul's Swift and Severe Response

When Saul hears about the people's sin, his reaction is immediate and decisive. It reveals a king grappling with his responsibility to uphold God's law, even at a high cost.
