It's easy to see foreign invaders or difficult circumstances as random bad luck. But the Bible offers a different perspective: sometimes, our enemies are part of God's loving, albeit painful, correction.
Discipline for Restoration
The nations listed – Sisera's army, the Philistines, the Moabites – were enemies Israel had a history with. God "sold" them into these hands not out of anger alone, but as a corrective measure. This discipline was meant to:
- Reveal the inadequacy of other 'gods' or alliances: Israel often turned to other nations or their own strength when they forgot God. This experience showed them those options were worthless.
- Drive them back to dependence on Him: The suffering was intended to be so severe that Israel would cry out to God and remember their need for His deliverance.
- Protect them from greater spiritual decay: Allowing them to suffer defeat was better than letting them drift further into idolatry and a complete abandonment of God's covenant.
