Samuel isn't just declaring his innocence; he's laying down a challenge, asking them to present any evidence of wrongdoing. He’s essentially saying, "You have the ultimate authority – God and His chosen king – to judge me, so bring your case and I'll make it right." This highlights the incredible confidence and integrity he had in his own righteous leadership.
Here I am; testify against me before the LORD and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me and I will restore it to you.” They said, “You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man’s hand.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Samuel is nearing the end of his leadership, and the Israelites, captivated by the success of other nations, have demanded a king. In this moment, Samuel stands before the people and their newly appointed king, Saul, and challenges anyone to bring forward accusations of corruption or injustice during his long tenure as judge. He's essentially asking for proof of any wrongdoing that would justify their demand for a new leader, setting the stage for his powerful farewell address.
Leaders today often face accusations and scrutiny. But what does it look like for a leader to have nothing to hide, even when challenged?
Samuel, at the end of his long leadership, makes a bold declaration. He challenges the Israelites to find any fault in his personal conduct regarding greed or injustice.
Leading by Example
Samuel doesn't just command; he demonstrates. He asks specific questions about taking oxen, donkeys, defrauding, oppressing, or accepting bribes – all common abuses of power in the ancient world.
Unblemished Service
His readiness to 'restore it' shows a willingness to be held accountable. This isn't just about following rules; it's about a life lived with integrity, reflecting the character of God he served.
Samuel doesn't just put himself on the line; he calls on the highest authorities to witness his defense. What does this tell us about true accountability?
Samuel's public address before the 'LORD and before His anointed' (the future king, likely Saul) highlights a profound understanding of authority and judgment.
Divine Oversight
He appeals directly to God as the ultimate judge. For Samuel, leadership was not just a human role but a sacred trust, answerable to the Almighty.

Human Scrutiny
He also calls on the people and their king to testify. This means he valued their perspective and was willing to be held accountable not just by God, but by those he served. True leaders understand they are watched.

This passage echoes Samuel's integrity by highlighting God's requirements: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly. Samuel lived out these very principles in his leadership.
Luke 3:14When questioned about their roles, soldiers asked John the Baptist, 'And we also, what shall we do?'
