It's striking that right after Saul is anointed king, the Spirit of God doesn't strike him down in judgment or empower him for immediate battle, but instead causes him to prophesy. This unexpected outpouring highlights that leadership, in God's eyes, is deeply connected to divine inspiration and speaking forth His word, not just earthly power.
When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” And a man of the place answered, “And who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Just before this, Samuel has anointed Saul as king in a private ceremony, a moment filled with divine intention but little public fanfare. This encounter with the prophets immediately follows that, showing the Spirit of God powerfully descending upon Saul in a public demonstration, marking his true commissioning for the role he's just been appointed to. It's a pivotal moment where Saul's intended leadership is publicly confirmed through prophetic action, rather than just a hidden anointing.
Imagine stepping into a place and suddenly feeling an overwhelming, unstoppable force. This isn't just a mood swing; it's God's Spirit at work.
Saul's life takes a dramatic turn here. Up until this point, he's been chosen, anointed, and even crowned king, but he hasn't yet experienced the full, dynamic power of God's Spirit.
A Transformative Power
When the Spirit of God 'rushed upon him,' it wasn't a gentle nudge. The Hebrew word suggests a powerful, overwhelming surge – like a flood or a storm. This divine energy didn't just make him feel good; it transformed his behavior, leading him to 'prophesy.'
This event marks a pivotal moment where God's empowerment directly impacts Saul, preparing him for the immense task of leading Israel. It shows that God’s Spirit isn't just for comfort, but for equipping and transforming us for His purposes.
What does it really mean to 'prophesy'? It wasn't just about telling the future; it was a powerful expression of God's heart and truth.
When Saul 'prophesied,' it wasn't necessarily about foretelling specific future events. In the Old Testament, prophecy often meant speaking forth God's message under the inspiration of His Spirit.
