Even though people rejected Jesus, He's presented here as the ultimate foundation, the "living stone" that God Himself has chosen and cherishes. This highlights the profound contrast between human opinion and God's perfect, eternal valuation. It's a reminder that what the world dismisses, God deems most precious.
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Peter is writing to believers scattered throughout Asia Minor, urging them to stand firm in their faith amidst suffering and persecution. He's just described them as spiritual babies needing pure spiritual milk (verses 1-3), and now he’s shifting to describe Jesus as the foundation of their identity and community. This "living stone" imagery directly connects Jesus' rejection by humanity with His supreme value and purpose in God's eyes, setting the stage for how believers, as "living stones" themselves, are built into a spiritual house through Him.
We're called to 'come to him,' but what does that really mean? It's not about being perfect first. It's about approaching Jesus with our whole selves.
Coming Authentically
Peter uses the image of drawing near to Jesus, like approaching a sacred place or a person of great importance. This isn't a hesitant, distant observation. It's an active engagement. The instruction implies that Jesus is the destination. We don't come to a set of rules or a philosophy; we come to Him.
This coming isn't conditional on our worthiness. It's the act of faith itself that brings us into His presence. Think of it as moving from the outer courts of doubt or ignorance into the inner sanctuary of His fellowship.
Jesus was famously rejected by people, yet God saw him differently. This paradox is central to who Jesus is and why He matters to us.
God's Perspective vs. Human Opinion
The verse presents a powerful contrast. Humans, in their flawed judgment, 'rejected' Jesus. This rejection was visible and painful, culminating in his crucifixion.
However, God's view is entirely different. To Him, Jesus is 'chosen and precious.' This isn't just a nice thought; it’s the divine valuation. Jesus is the cornerstone, the one God deliberately selected for His ultimate plan. His perceived failure by men was, in God's eyes, the ultimate success and the foundation of everything.

This highlights that human approval is fleeting and often misguided, while God's assessment is eternal and absolute.
