It's easy to breeze past "living and abiding" and think it just means God's Word is powerful. But Peter's choice of words here is vital: it's not just any old message, but a life-giving source that's actively present and will never fade, unlike anything else in this world. This means our spiritual life isn't built on something temporary, but on the very unfading essence of God Himself.
since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Peter is reminding believers of their new identity in Christ, a radical transformation that sets them apart from the world. Just before this, he described their previous state as living in futile ways, but now, through God's Word, they've been reborn with an eternal inheritance. This new birth is the source of their hope and strength as they face trials and persecution.
Ever feel like you're trying to patch up an old life? This verse tells us we've had a complete upgrade, a brand new start.
Peter uses powerful language here: "born again." This isn't just a change of habits; it's a fundamental transformation. We've been given a new life, a new nature, a new spiritual identity. It's as profound as moving from death to life.
Think about it: the old you, with all its limitations and failures, has been replaced by a new creation in Christ. This new birth isn't something we achieve; it's something God does to us through His Spirit.
What kind of 'seed' are you planted in? Peter highlights a crucial difference between temporary and lasting life.
Peter contrasts two types of seed: perishable and imperishable. Perishable things decay, they wither, they die. Think of a flower that blooms for a day or food that spoils.
But the life God gives is different. It comes from an "imperishable" seed – something that cannot die, cannot decay, and is eternal. This new life is rooted in the very being of God, who is eternal. It’s a life that will last forever because its source is God's unchanging nature.
Life doesn't just pop into existence; it needs a source. Where does this new, imperishable life come from?
Peter points directly to the "living and abiding word of God" as the means by which this new birth occurs. This isn't just any word; it's God's Word that is:
