It's easy to see Ahab as the sole villain, but this verse points a finger directly at Jezebel, highlighting her active role in inciting his wickedness. This reveals a crucial dynamic: sometimes, the greatest evil is fueled not just by the doer, but by the one pushing them from behind.
(There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the LORD like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. He acted very abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the LORD cast out before the people of Israel.)
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse caps off a dramatic account where King Ahab, spurred on by his wicked wife Jezebel, unjustly seizes the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. After Naboth is murdered through their scheming, Elijah the prophet confronts Ahab, announcing God's severe judgment upon him and his lineage for this blatant sin and injustice. The preceding chapters show Ahab's consistent pattern of doing evil and following the ways of pagan nations, making this particular act of greed and murder the culmination of his reign's depravity.
Ever feel like you're stuck in a rut, making bad choices? Ahab took this to a whole new level.
The verse calls Ahab "none who sold himself to do what was evil." This isn't just about making mistakes; it's a deliberate, willing surrender to sin.
