Jeroboam was trying to solve a problem, but his solution created a much bigger one. What happens when we try to make worship easier or more palatable?
After the kingdom split, Jeroboam feared the people would return to Jerusalem to worship, thus reuniting with Rehoboam. To prevent this, he created his own religious system.
The Problem of Worship
God's command was clear: worship was to happen in Jerusalem. But for Jeroboam, this was inconvenient and politically risky. So, he devised a new plan.
The 'Solution'
- New Feast Day: He established a feast similar to the Feast of Tabernacles, but in the eighth month instead of the seventh.
- New Worship Centers: He set up altars in Bethel and Dan.
- New Objects of Worship: Most shockingly, he fashioned golden calves, telling the people these were the gods that brought them out of Egypt.
