A king needs good counsel, but what happens when the advisors disagree, and the king makes a choice based on bad advice? This passage shows the ripple effect of poor leadership.
Seeking Counsel vs. Ignoring Wisdom
Jeroboam and the people came to Rehoboam, asking for a lighter yoke. They presented a clear request, rooted in real hardship. Rehoboam, instead of seeking wise counsel, listened to his young, inexperienced friends.
- The Young Friends' Advice: "If this people speak to you, answer them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins!' And whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.'" (1 Kings 12:10-11)
- The Cost of Pride: This advice was arrogant and intended to assert dominance rather than address the people's needs. It lacked any understanding of how to lead or listen.
Rehoboam’s decision to follow this rash counsel, rather than the wisdom of the elders who had served his father, set the stage for disaster.
