1 John 5:10-12

It's easy to see this as just about belief in Jesus, but notice the subtle shift in the second half: not believing God means you've essentially called God a liar. That's a powerful assertion from John – our unbelief isn't just a personal miss; it's a direct indictment against God's own character and truthfulness.
Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John is emphasizing the absolute certainty and internal conviction that comes from believing in Jesus, contrasting it sharply with the devastating self-deception of unbelief. He's just explained how God's testimony about Jesus—given through the Spirit, the water, and the blood—confirms Jesus' divine identity. Failing to accept this divine testimony, John argues, means labeling God a liar, a truly shocking consequence that highlights the gravity of rejecting Jesus.
What does it mean to truly believe? It's more than just saying the words. This verse points to something deep inside that confirms our faith.
The Testimony Within
John highlights that genuine belief in Jesus isn't just an intellectual agreement; it carries its own internal confirmation. When you truly believe in the Son of God, you possess 'the testimony in himself.' This means the truth of who Jesus is and what He's done resonates within your spirit. It's a deep-seated assurance, a knowledge that goes beyond proof or argument. It's the Holy Spirit testifying alongside your spirit that you are a child of God (Romans 8:16). This inner certainty is the bedrock of faith, providing peace and confidence even when circumstances are uncertain.
This verse makes a startling claim about those who don't believe. It doesn't just say they're wrong; it says they're calling God a liar. Let's unpack that weighty statement.
The Implication of Rejection
John doesn't mince words when he contrasts belief with disbelief. To refuse to believe God's testimony about His Son is to reject the very character and truthfulness of God. God has provided clear evidence – the testimony concerning His Son – and by not believing it, one is essentially saying, 'I don't trust what God says is true.' This is a profound charge, leveling a serious accusation against the Creator. It implies that the evidence isn't the problem; the refusal to accept it is. It's a deliberate turning away from divine truth that brands God as untrustworthy.
