What's really striking here isn't just what you believe about Jesus, but the act of confessing it. The early church was facing constant pressure and deception, so to openly declare "Jesus Christ has come in the flesh" was a bold, public statement that put believers at risk. It was this persistent, courageous testimony that served as the genuine mark of God's Spirit.
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John is addressing the community because false prophets have gone out into the world, spreading lies about Jesus. He's giving them a way to discern the true Spirit of God from deceptive spirits, explaining that recognizing Jesus’s real humanity is the key test. This teaching is crucial because it directly follows his call to test the spirits, and immediately precedes his affirmation of God's love for us, which is demonstrated through sending Jesus.
Ever wondered how to tell if a spiritual claim is really from God? This verse gives us a clear, non-negotiable test.
John gives us a practical tool for discernment. It’s not about flashy signs or emotional highs, but about a core confession: Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.
The Incarnation is Key
This wasn't just any historical event; it was God Himself stepping into human reality. The 'coming in the flesh' means God became truly human, not just appearing to be. This is the central claim of Christianity.
Why This Test Matters
Not every voice that sounds spiritual is from God. John warns us there are 'spirits' out there trying to lead us astray.
John is writing in a context where false teachers were a real problem. These individuals might have claimed spiritual insight or divine authority, but their message twisted the truth about Jesus.
