1 John 3:7-10

What does 1 John 3:7-10 mean?

It's easy to read this and think it's about earning righteousness, but John's pointing out the source. He's saying that if you're truly living righteously, it's because you already are righteous, reflecting the very righteousness of Christ Himself, not the other way around.

Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

What 1 John 3:7-10 means

In this section of 1 John, the apostle is contrasting those who truly belong to God with those who are aligned with the deceiver, Satan. He's warning believers against false teachers who might be downplaying the importance of sin and claiming spiritual status without any real change in behavior. Therefore, this verse serves as a crucial litmus test: genuine righteousness is demonstrated through consistent, active doing of what is right, mirroring God's own character.

The Deception of False Righteousness

It's easy to feel good about ourselves, even when we're not living right. John warns us about this spiritual trickery. How can we spot it?

John opens with a strong warning: 'Little children, let no one deceive you.' This isn't about minor misunderstandings; it's about serious spiritual deception. The danger is thinking you're right with God when you're not. This deception often comes from a place of wanting to maintain a good self-image without the hard work of actual change. John is saying, wake up! Don't let anyone, including yourself, fool you into believing you're in God's favor if your life doesn't reflect it.

Practice: The Proof of Being Righteous

How do we know if we're truly righteous? John gives us a clear, practical test. It's not about feeling, but about doing.

The core of John's message here is the connection between practice and identity. He states plainly: 'Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.' This isn't saying we earn righteousness by our actions; rather, our consistent practice of doing what is right is the outward evidence that we are righteous. It's like seeing a healthy tree bearing good fruit – the fruit doesn't make the tree healthy, but it proves it. True righteousness isn't just a belief or a momentary feeling; it's a way of life demonstrated through consistent choices and actions that align with God's will.
