1 John 3:14-18

What does 1 John 3:14-18 mean?

This verse isn't just about feeling good about ourselves; it's a bold declaration that genuine love for other believers is the proof we've truly been changed by God. It flips the script, showing that this love isn't a nice extra, but the undeniable sign that we've gone from spiritual death to new life in Christ.

We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What 1 John 3:14-18 means

John is drawing a stark contrast between genuine believers and those who are not, emphasizing that true Christian life is marked by selfless love for fellow believers. This idea flows directly from his earlier discussion of Jesus' perfect example and the new commandment to love one another, setting the stage for him to further explore the practical implications of this love in the following verses.

The Undeniable Mark of New Life

How can you be absolutely sure you've truly passed from spiritual death to spiritual life? John points to something incredibly powerful and visible.

John doesn't suggest our salvation is a vague feeling or a complex theological debate. Instead, he offers a direct, observable sign: love for other believers.

A Definitive Shift

This isn't about a slight improvement; it's a profound transition. 'We know' implies certainty. This certainty comes not from introspection alone, but from a changed outward expression – demonstrating love.

The Command and the Evidence

Jesus Himself emphasized this. He said, 'By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another' (John 13:35). Our love for fellow believers becomes the undeniable evidence of God's transforming work within us.

The Stark Alternative: Remaining in Death

What happens if this crucial evidence of love is missing? John doesn't mince words about the consequence.

The second part of the verse presents a sobering reality. It's not just about the positive sign of life, but also the negative consequence of its absence.

Abiding in Death

'Whoever does not love abides in death.' This means if the evidence of love isn't present, the person remains in a state of spiritual death. 'Abides' suggests a continuous, unchanging condition. It's a state of separation from God's life-giving presence.
