What's striking here isn't just that God is light, but the absolute finality of "no darkness at all." John emphasizes this completeness to shatter any idea that God might have even a tiny bit of imperfection or shadow within Him. It's a bold declaration that God is pure, unadulterated goodness, and that's the core of the message he's sharing.
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
