This verse reveals that genuine fellowship isn't just about having Jesus, but about sharing Him. The apostles didn't just witness Christ; they proclaimed Him so that others could enter into that very same shared life they experienced with God.
that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John is writing to assure believers they can have genuine relationship with God, just as he and the other apostles have experienced. He's establishing his authority and the trustworthiness of his message by testifying to what he personally witnessed with Jesus. This foundation of shared experience and truth is presented as the very basis for true fellowship, both among believers and with God himself.
Imagine the most important news of your life. The apostles weren't just repeating rumors; they saw and heard Jesus with their own eyes and ears.
John starts this letter with a powerful declaration. The core message of the gospel isn't based on speculation or ancient myths. It's built on the real, tangible experiences of those who walked with Jesus.
From Experience to Proclamation
The apostles saw Jesus' miracles, heard His teachings, and witnessed His resurrection. This wasn't a private show; it was a historical event. Their proclamation—their public announcement—was rooted in this undeniable reality. They are passing on something they personally encountered, urging others to believe what they know to be true.
Why share this 'seen and heard' message? It's not just about informing people; it's about inviting them into something incredible.
The purpose of proclaiming the gospel, according to John, is so that others might have fellowship with them. But this isn't just about joining a community of believers. It's a doorway to something far deeper.
Fellowship with God
This fellowship with the apostles leads directly to a greater fellowship: 'our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.' This is the heart of the Christian life – being brought into intimate relationship with God Himself through Jesus.
This means sharing in His life, His love, and His purposes. It’s a mutual sharing and participation, moving from isolation to connection, from darkness to the light of God’s presence.
