The surprising emphasis isn't on staying a slave, but on not letting your status define you when God calls. Paul actually encourages seeking freedom if it's available, showing that while your circumstances don't have to change your spiritual identity, there's no biblical reason to cling to oppressive ones.
Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men. So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is addressing the Corinthian church about how their Christian faith should impact their current life circumstances, particularly regarding social status and relationships. He's just told them to remain in the state they were in when God called them, whether slave or free, and this verse directly addresses those who were enslaved. It's a continuation of his counsel that the transforming power of Christ is far more significant than outward social distinctions, even if that means staying in a difficult situation.
Imagine being a slave when God's call came to you. How does Paul's advice reshape your perspective on your circumstances?
Paul addresses a tough reality for many in the early church: some were enslaved when they became Christians. He doesn't dismiss their situation but reframes it.
The Inner Freedom
Paul's core message is that our calling into Christ is more significant than our social standing. Your status as a slave or free person is temporary and earthly. Your identity in Christ is eternal and heavenly.
Focus on What Matters
He encourages believers not to be anxious or overly concerned about their earthly condition. This doesn't mean ignoring it, but it means not letting it define your core identity or your relationship with God. The real freedom is spiritual.
Paul says 'don't be concerned,' but then immediately says 'if you can gain your freedom, do so!' How do these seemingly opposite ideas work together?
This is where Paul shows practical wisdom. While our spiritual freedom in Christ is paramount, he doesn't advocate for passive resignation to all earthly hardships.
The Opportunity for Freedom
Ask a follow-up
If a practical way exists to improve one's earthly situation, especially by gaining freedom, Paul encourages taking it. This shows that God's calling doesn't negate the need for wise stewardship of our lives and circumstances.
A Balanced Perspective
It's a beautiful balance: find your ultimate security and identity in Christ's call, but don't neglect responsible action in the world when opportunities arise to improve your lot.
