This verse isn't just about highlighting the roles of Paul and Apollos; it's a divine correction to any division among believers. The focus shifts from the leaders to the Lord who assigned their roles, reminding everyone that their faith was a gift from Him, not a product of human champions.
What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is addressing a deeply concerning issue in the Corinthian church: they're forming factions and boasting about their favorite spiritual leaders, like Paul himself and Apollos, rather than focusing on Christ. He's reminding them that he and Apollos are merely instruments in God's hand, planting and watering the seeds of faith, but it's God who ultimately brings the growth. Their division and personal loyalties are distracting them from the real work of God and their unity in Him.
Ever wonder who's 'in charge' when different gifted people lead your church or small group? This verse cuts through the noise.
Paul and Apollos were amazing leaders, but they weren't the ultimate authorities. Paul reminds the Corinthians that their roles were assigned by God.
