The world values sharp intellect and clever arguments. But God's path to wisdom looks totally different – it might even seem backwards!
Paul then contrasts worldly wisdom with God's wisdom. He says, "If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise." The wisdom of the 'age' or the world often puffs people up. It relies on human reason, status, and cleverness. Paul challenges this by saying that to gain true wisdom (God's wisdom), you must first let go of that worldly pretense of wisdom. It means admitting we don't have all the answers, letting go of our pride, and embracing the apparent foolishness of the cross – that God saves through a crucified Messiah, which was scandal to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles (1 Corinthians 1:23). This surrender is the very first step toward genuine, life-giving wisdom from God.
