Why did Paul emphasize who saw Jesus? What does that tell us about the foundation of our faith?
Paul isn't just sharing stories; he's presenting evidence. The early Christian message was built on verifiable events, not myths or legends.
The Foundation of Faith
Paul lists these appearances because the resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian belief. If Jesus didn't rise from the dead, then Paul himself says our faith is useless (1 Corinthians 15:14).
- Historical Reality: The appearances ground the faith in historical fact. Jesus lived, died, and was raised – and people saw Him!
- Credibility: By naming specific witnesses, Paul lends credibility to the Gospel message. He's saying, 'This isn't hearsay; these are people you can trust, or at least verify.'
Jesus Appears to Many
While Paul names Peter and the twelve here, he goes on to mention that Jesus appeared to over 500 people at once, then to James, and finally to Paul himself. This pattern shows:
- Consistent Message: The resurrection message was consistent across different groups and settings.
- Personal Encounters: Jesus met people where they were, in various circumstances, confirming His living presence.
