Jesus' reign isn't just a future hope; it's a present reality that's actively dismantling every opposing force. What's striking is the completeness implied in "under his feet" – it's not a temporary truce, but total subjugation and final victory over everything that stands against God's kingdom. This gives us incredible confidence, knowing that even now, the ultimate triumph is already secured.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is addressing a group who are questioning the resurrection of the dead, even denying it outright. He's been building a powerful case for why Christ's resurrection is essential to our own, explaining that Jesus is the first fruits of those who will be raised. This verse then directly follows his explanation of Jesus' current reign in heaven, a reign that will continue until every opposing force is vanquished.
Have you ever felt like the world is in chaos, with no clear leader in charge? Paul confronts that very feeling here, assuring us of a reign that is not optional, but necessary.
A Reign That Must Happen
Paul uses the word "must" – it's not a suggestion, it's a divine necessity. Jesus' reign isn't dependent on our belief or the world's acceptance. It's a fundamental part of God's plan.
The image of putting enemies 'under his feet' is ancient and powerful. What does it truly signify for Christ's ultimate victory?
Definitive Defeat, Not Just Management
This isn't about Jesus managing difficult situations or negotiating peace treaties with His adversaries. It's about total, decisive victory.
