If love is eternal, why do we even need things like prophecy or speaking in tongues? This verse helps us understand the role of spiritual gifts.
Paul isn't downplaying the importance of spiritual gifts; he's putting them in their proper, temporal context.
For the Present Age
These gifts were given to equip the early church, to build it up, and to point to God in a world that didn't yet have the completed Word of God.
Signposts, Not Destinations
They were meant to guide believers towards maturity and understanding. Once maturity is reached (when 'the perfect comes'), the need for these specific signposts diminishes. Love, however, is the goal and the way to get there, and it remains essential even in eternity.
