1 Corinthians 11:23-26

What does 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 mean?

Notice how Paul emphasizes that the whole practice of Communion, right down to the details of Jesus’ betrayal, wasn't his own invention, but a direct transmission from the Lord himself. This isn't just a tradition; it’s divine revelation about the very moment of Christ's sacrifice being made known to us.

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

What 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 means

Paul is addressing the Corinthian church's often chaotic and disunity-filled gatherings, particularly their practice of the Lord's Supper. Before this verse, he's been guiding them on how to conduct themselves in worship, emphasizing order and respect, especially concerning head coverings and social distinctions. He then pivots to the core meaning of the Lord's Supper, explaining its origins and profound significance as instituted by Jesus himself on the night of his betrayal, setting the stage for a deeper understanding of communion in the following verses.

Receiving God's Truth Directly

Ever wonder how we know what we know about Jesus, especially about moments like the Last Supper? Paul reveals a powerful truth about the source of his teaching.

Divine Origin of the Message

Paul starts by emphasizing that the teaching about the Lord's Supper didn't originate with him or any human committee. He explicitly states, "For I received from the Lord...". This means the very core of what we understand about this sacred meal comes directly from Jesus himself.

A Chain of Trust

This act of "receiving" and then "delivering" establishes a chain of trust. Jesus passed this knowledge to Paul, and Paul, in turn, faithfully passed it on to the church in Corinth. It's a testament to the reliability of the message, not based on hearsay, but on divine revelation.

Jesus's Betrayal, Our Sacred Meal

The verse places the Last Supper in a moment of intense human betrayal. How does this context shape the meaning of the bread?

The Shadow of Betrayal

The scene is set not in a moment of peace, but on the very night Jesus was betrayed. This backdrop is crucial. It highlights Jesus's deep love and obedience, choosing to institute this meal even while facing profound rejection and suffering from those closest to him.
