The core of Christian faith sounds utterly ridiculous to the outside world. Why did God choose such a plan?
Paul's argument hinges on the event that defined early Christianity: the crucifixion of Jesus.
A Stumbling Block
To the Jews, a crucified Messiah was a scandal. Their expectation was a conquering king, not a suffering servant executed as a criminal. It tripped them up, challenging their entire understanding of God's promises.
Utter Foolishness
To the Gentiles, the idea of worshipping a crucified man was sheer foolishness. Their cultures celebrated powerful gods and heroic figures, not a victim dying a shameful death. It was illogical and laughable.
Divine Strategy
Yet, Paul declares this apparent absurdity is precisely where God's wisdom and power are most brilliantly displayed. The cross, seen as the ultimate weakness and foolishness by humans, is God's chosen method to dismantle the power of sin and death and to save those who believe. It reveals a God who operates outside our limited categories of strength and sense.
