While the rest of the men fled, someone extraordinary stood with David. This sets the stage for understanding true valor.
This passage is the prelude to an incredible act of bravery by one of David's mighty men, Eleazar. While the rank and file scattered, Eleazar stood his ground. He saw a field of barley, a symbol of provision and potential harvest, under threat. Instead of fleeing, he 'stood his ground and struck down the Philistines, till his hand was weary and stuck to his sword. The Lord gave him a great victory that day.' (1 Chronicles 11:14 ESV). This contrast is vital: the army fled, but David's chosen warrior did not. It shows that amidst widespread fear, there can be individuals who, empowered by faith, choose a different path.
